Safeway is back - if all else fails then rebrand

Today's announcement by Morrisons to revive the Safeway brand and it momentarily transported me back 30 years or so to my teens . We had a Safeway in Giffnock near our house. As a child the biggest thrill of an outing was the rooftop carpark but for some reason Dad never parked there but they owned a plot of land across the road  in a side street where everybody parked. A very odd arrangement and the store changed names / ownership a number of times (Galbraiths and Presto spring to mind) like pass the parcel.

One wonders why Morrisons see fit to revive the brand but only behind the scenes for stuff it manufactures for 3rd parties. Is this the thin end of the wedge and will we see Morrisons gently slip past their "sell by" date ? Normally a rebrand is a way to take customers' minds of something negative but I can't quite see where this is going. Do Morrisons ?

Any ideas or thoughts out there ?

At least Safeway is in my living memory - we went there from sixth form.

Some bank or other (I forget which) seems to be bringing back a brand I haven't heard of - Williams & Glynns?

EDIT - wonder, (with apologies) if these were Scottish?

At least admist th ehubris they changed their name to RBS , dropping the "Scotland" . Perhaps an SNP grand conspiracy to avoid embarassment

If it flops it will not reflect so badly on the Morrisons brand. If it succeeds it can be sold easily. Some brands have been brought back successfully from the past where they have no 'baggage'
