It’s that time of year again where employers across the UK need to finalise their 2016/17 tax year and begin preparing for the new tax year. BrightPay have recently released their payroll software package for 2017/18, which is full of exciting new payroll features and legislative changes.

Here are some of the new features we have introduced this year:

Open Screen Customisation - The BrightPay open screen can now be customised by individual users. Users can choose which columns they would like to view in their open screen, including a wide range of columns, such as number of employees, auto enrolment staging date, number of unsent submissions, client contact name and client notes. There is also the option to sort the list of employers to the users preference. This feature is very useful for payroll bureaus, especially those who have a large number of payroll clients. The number of outstanding submissions to be sent will also be divided into RTI / Auto Enrolment / CIS, rather than having the total figure showing.

Batch RTI - BrightPay users will find a new ‘Batch Operation’ tab on the open employer screen. This allows users to select an operation, choose the employers they wish to apply it to and run the operation. There is also a ‘Send all outstanding submissions’ option which applies to both RTI and CIS submissions.

Import Multiple Employers via CSV - This year, a sought after feature request was the employer import facility where users can bulk import multiple employers at the same time via CSV file. BrightPay now has a seamless, straightforward employer / client import facility to allow for easier transfer of employer files.

Payroll Journal / Accounts Export - An exciting new feature this year is our payroll journal export. This allows user to create a wages journal from the finalised payslips with pay dates in a chosen date range. There is also the possibility to export this journal to accounts packages via CSV. This is currently compatible with five accounting software providers (Exact, Kashflow, Quickbooks, Sage and Xero) and includes the default nominal ledger codes for four of these.

Apprenticeship Levy - The government are introducing the Apprenticeship Levy on 6th April 2017. The new levy will be paid by employers to help fund new apprenticeships in the future. An annual allowance of £15,000 will be made available to each employer to offset their levy payment. From the 6th April, the levy amount can be enabled, automatically calculated and applied to HMRC payments in BrightPay and can be reported to HMRC via EPS.

Piece of Work Rate - This is where workers are paid per task they perform or piece of work they do. A piece work rate is generally only used in limited situations when the employer doesn’t know which hours the worker does. Users can now calculate an employee's pay using a piece of work rate in BrightPay.

Scottish Tax Thresholds - Scottish taxpayers will now have a tax code which starts with an ‘S’. This tells your employer or pension provider to deduct tax at the Scottish rate. The Scottish Rate of Income Tax is included in BrightPay 2017/18.

Payrolling of Cars - Last year we introduced payrolling of benefits. This year we have added payrolling of cars to this feature. These details are included on an FPS to be sent to HMRC.
