HMRC don’t really like us do they? Even their friends say so

HMRC’s critical friend the Administrative Burdens Advisory Board said this in their recent Report “we are alarmed to hear that there have been further delays to the reciprocal arrangements for Agents. The great majority of small businesses interact and have a relationship with an agent for some or all of their tax affairs. We feel there is an urgent need to identify a workable solution to allow agents to benefit from digital delivery; which in turn will have a positive effect and bring benefits to their clients” The words in bold are per the ABAB.

Now I wonder how did the following go down with HMRC? “HMRC need to accept and recognise that many-probably most-businesses will continue to use an agent to help with tax responsibilities”

HMRC are paying lip service to the idea of engaging with Agents and they say the right words when asked but actions certainly speak louder than words and so far agents everywhere are still waiting for concrete actions to replace the rhetoric.

We are being promised access to everything our clients have access to and when that happens we will all heave a sigh of relief and the tax system will undoubtedly work far better than it is now so to HMRC I say If you don’t want to listen to us then at least listen to what your friends say and don’t point me at promises made point me to the solution when it finally comes.
