Doctorate of Tax

Does such a thing exist, and how would one go about getting it?

I am far from a bright person most of the time, but if there is one thing I can do it is excel academically, so I figure Doctor Confused would be attainable (yes, in this one area I am exceedingly arrogant) and would give me something to do. Now I could try and do it a subject I do well at, or I could learn some tax while I do it. Tell me I could do a Doctorate in VAT! That would be great!

I suspect a PhD is a job however, so I fear it would be work or PhD, not both.

Yes, I'm on the up point of my mood swings at the moment, its either you aim me at something academic or you see me on the news when I try and take over the world!

CTA (fellow)

You can spend years researching an area of tax ad nauseum and be awarded a CTA (fellow) for your efforts if you are already a CTA.

is not getting the academic qualifications it's getting a job afterwards. However I have heard that Asda, Tesco and the like are looking for the older, more qualified student to encourage sales.

just do the CTA, but that is so mainstream. Being a Doctor would be more fun. Especially if someone chokes in a restraunt.

A former employer of mine had a doctorate in tax - firstly trained as a lawyer and then did his PhD in tax and the constitution. It was at a uni in South Africa (which doesn't help you) but I am sure that a uni in UK would do it as well.

According to reliable source university of St Thomas-faculty of law (US)

have a JD in International Taxation and also University of Southafrica (unisa) have many progrrames in tax such as LLD,Phd and alsoDBA

It's not quite that difficult to become a CTA (Fellow) …

... but several universities offer an MA programme in tax. If you want to fit it around earning a living, the IALS offer a course that can be pursued predominantly during evenings and over weekends. There are possibly better ways to use £10,000 though.

When I was working in the Middle East, an Indian chortled about the need to verify degree etc certificate documents, because he had seen too many certificates from the "University of the Front Room" that consisted of a PC and colour printer etc!

As this is Time Out, why not consider cheering yourself up by printing a "Doctorate of Tax" degree certificate for yourself, in your "University of the Front Room"?
