Shipley or Cumbernauld
It would be really useful if HMRC could advertise a bit more whether a client needs to pay their tax to Shipley or Cumbernauld, for PAYE, SA and CT. I know it says this on the statements they send out, but if you can't find one of those then the only way I know of finding out is to ring them up - not a good use of anyone's resources. Is there a way of working this out based on the client's tax office (but see further gripe below)?
Could this information be added to the "about your client" section on the on line account?
Also, this year, locating the client's tax office has become a game too. They seem to be playing merry-go-rounds with everyone's tax office and for many tax returns this year, I have not known which office to put on the form. I have come to the conclusion that if you are filing electronically it does not seem to matter to much, but that is not the point. There is a space for the tax office address on the tax return and the client expects to see an address there. Again - why can the tax office not be shown on the client's on line account?
Including Account Period refs
Would also be useful if the online facility could give the A/O references for the specific Accounting Period too- to aid electronic payment when no pre-printed payslip is to hand (quite regular occurrence!)
I hear you
Have already called HMRC - the lady on the phone said the info about tax office and Accounts office was on her screen and was under the impression i could see it too. It should be a simple matter for the IT guys to allow us to view that same data on the about your client screen too!
On another note is the AO for CT the same as the AO for PAYE for a particular client - might be handy to know that!
Why they just don't have one central AO anyway I'll never know...
Typical HMRC
I've complained about this for a long time.
HMRC seem to come up with unnecessary hoops to jump through.
Any other organisation would have one bank account and split the work between offices internally.
I agree that we should put the tax office on the tax return but I refusing to contact HMRC unless it's very necessary so I usually say that the tax office is not known. If HMRC refuses to tell us and doesn't seem to care why do they have the box in the first place?
Pay Office 2 thanks
I found a page only this morning on my on-line agent's page as follows:
Clients/Select Client/View Statements/Contact HMRC/Where you have an Agent. If you scroll down this page you will find the relevant Accounts Office.
Hope this is helpful.

HMRC website says if you are
HMRC website says if you are unsure which office to send payment to then it should go to Cumbernauld.
Seemigly it doesn't matter where client's tax office is if you file returns online. Agents helpline told me it would be ok to leave this blank.
Pay online @ Billpay
The box where you had to chose Shipley or Cumbernauld when you made a Self-Assessment or Corporation tax payment has gone, but it's still there for PAYE.
PAYE payments
I was left frustrated this morning by some similar problems with catching up a client's PAYE payments. Not only could I not discover easily whether payments should be made to Cumbernauld or Shipley but now we have to deal with extended accounts office reference numbers depending on what period you are trying to pay.
I'm sorry but if this is supposed to improve the handling of payments it should be at least understandable. I consider it so confusing that I am just going to ignore it.
well it used to be..
fairly simple in that anything sort of North of Stoke was Cubernauld and anything South Shipley. the line isn't straight across, but that's a rough guide. Could've changed of course, everything else has. this was client adddress btw, not tax office address and was back int he day when a local business was dealt with by the local office.
agree on the need for the assessing sub no to be available somewhere on line tho, that is a nightmare at times without the bit of paper. Even the bulk notice to deliver doesn;t have them.
@ weaversmiths
Thanks very much for that! Now why do they have to hide it in the section headed "statements"?
Thanks very much for that! 1 thanks
That's OK Taxhound. I dont know how long it has been there but I found it because I had got bored playing cards to while away the time on long boring telephone calls and started clicking through my Agents page.(:-).
Sent my last TR at 11.35pm last evening - free at last! ('till next year).
No statements, no details.
If you click "View statements" and there are none to display (eg new case or usually PAYE), there is no link to "Contact HMRC" page.
Don't worry, if you print SA361 payslip, it instructs you to post the cheque to Bradford. We still have several years' supply of freepost and reply paid envelopes.

I agree @taxhound
The online utility could be so much more useful if it gave information already held online. This would save lots of time being wasted on both sides of the fence.
