Yup I'm always too late as well on the white rabbits!
I always salute magpies (mentally rather than physically these days so they don't lock me up) and if I see a single one I'm always looking for a second one. But I tell myself it doesn't matter..
Breaking a mirror probably wouldn't bother me (other than trying to get all the tiny bits up before they get into a paw) and I'm happy to tread on cracks in the pavement. I'd open an umbrella indoors to dry it, not sure if I'd put it over my head though... And I wouldn't walk under a ladder out of choice purely to ensure nothing fell on my head!
So I don't think I'm superstitious but I do have OCD in terms of safety and security so I have to check various doors are locked several times, have a panic that turning the switch off has caused a power surge and the house will go up in flames while I'm asleep, and so on. All good fun (not) and just as illogical as superstitions! And I do like things in particular numbers - 2, 3, 5, 10, 13, 15, 20, 25 and round tens after that. No idea why that is but it would stop me eating 4 biscuits instead of 3 (and equally drive me on to 5 instead of 4, though in fairness that might just be greed)
Where is the line
I think there's an interesting line as to what is superstitious and what is not. For example, I don't walk under a ladder because something might fall down - not because it's superstitious.
Has anyone here actually ever found a four-leaved clover? I searched for ages in my youth but never found one :(

How do you know that the magpie isn't the wife, a single parent or has no children?! If you say Mr Magpie and it's female then I wouldn't guarantee much good luck - unless you believe that a bird crapping on you is good luck which some do? (I don't!)

... I never voted for change, I saw through Bliar from the start - I knew we had come through the "growing pains" and were just starting to pick up with a really strong economy, the only thing that amazed me was how strong it was - so that it endured enough of Brown's abuse to allow Bliar to con the mugs in to a third (and fatal) term!
Back to the magpies then
I saw a solitary one this morning and made a point of not only saluting it but saying 'morning Mr Magpie, Mrs Magpie, Ms Magpie, Master Magpie & Mistress Magpie (which in hindsight should have just been Miss)'. So having covered my bases I think I'm in for some good luck and I'm using it for a win by Miami in the NFL this evening (we're leading at the mo but usually throw it away in the 4th quarter - maybe I should pop out to see if I can spot more magpies..)

Well breaking a mirror to me is x years bad luck, where x is the number of shards it has broken into.
I can't cross on stairs, walk on cracks, have the volume on an odd number, step on the middle of 3 steps on the small stairs at work, drink certain drinks using my right hand... I think I have wandered into OCD however.
Oddly I CAN open an umbrella indoors, as I read in a book the basis for that is 'it offends the Sun God', so I had a chat with him and he said it was fine, so no problems opening umbrellas indoors.
