Superstitions
Are you superstitious? I don't think I am, but my Mum was, and some of her habits have rubbed off onto me.
It's the first of the month today and I automatically think 'White Rabbit' day, but usually too late for them to be my first words ;)
A few more of my Mums 'daily' habits were:
Don't mix red and white (it causes sorrow). Don't walk under ladders. Cross your fingers when saying anything that may 'tempt fate'. The old Magpie saying (One for sorrow, two for joy), don't cross knives when setting the table, it's seven years bad luck if you break a mirror, and many many more!
What superstitions have rubbed off onto you, if any?
I don't walk under ladders ...
... you never know when the bod at the top may drop something;
This reckless lassie don't care though;

I also count Magpies, such a beautiful bird, but such a predator too!
May be this should be on the "Good Old Days" thread

Other than that no, unless you count never crossing the road when cars are coming!
Although I do find my self saying red sky at night when I see a sunset, but invariably it rains next day
White rabbits
Yup I'm always too late as well on the white rabbits!
I always salute magpies (mentally rather than physically these days so they don't lock me up) and if I see a single one I'm always looking for a second one. But I tell myself it doesn't matter..
Breaking a mirror probably wouldn't bother me (other than trying to get all the tiny bits up before they get into a paw) and I'm happy to tread on cracks in the pavement. I'd open an umbrella indoors to dry it, not sure if I'd put it over my head though... And I wouldn't walk under a ladder out of choice purely to ensure nothing fell on my head!
So I don't think I'm superstitious but I do have OCD in terms of safety and security so I have to check various doors are locked several times, have a panic that turning the switch off has caused a power surge and the house will go up in flames while I'm asleep, and so on. All good fun (not) and just as illogical as superstitions! And I do like things in particular numbers - 2, 3, 5, 10, 13, 15, 20, 25 and round tens after that. No idea why that is but it would stop me eating 4 biscuits instead of 3 (and equally drive me on to 5 instead of 4, though in fairness that might just be greed)
Where is the line
I think there's an interesting line as to what is superstitious and what is not. For example, I don't walk under a ladder because something might fall down - not because it's superstitious.
Has anyone here actually ever found a four-leaved clover? I searched for ages in my youth but never found one :(
Horseshoes?
@tibi - 4 leaf clover?
I think I saw them advertised on one of my gardening sites last year
Clover
I think I saw them advertised on one of my gardening sites last year
I'm not sure genetically modified clovers qualify to be "lucky"!
And you certainly won't be lucky if you plant clover in your garden!!
Apparently ...
... around 1 in 10,000 clovers have four leaves!
But!
... around 1 in 10,000 clovers have four leaves!
Apparently 1 in 5 "facts" are made up!!
I did find this ...
... from a number of independant sources, and anyway, 80% chance of it being right is good enough for me!
Good morning Mr Magpie ...
how are your wife and children today? You have to say that every time you see one if you want good luck for the day.
Bit sexist :)
How do you know that the magpie isn't the wife, a single parent or has no children?! If you say Mr Magpie and it's female then I wouldn't guarantee much good luck - unless you believe that a bird crapping on you is good luck which some do? (I don't!)
Well you break it if you like ...
but next time someone shouts 'Gordon's alive' .... I'll mumble ... 'have you checked'!
:)
Lol :) maybe I'll go with greeting the magpie as 'Magpie' and hope they'll forgive the familiarity... Knowing my luck the magpie will turn around, give a huge smarmy smile and say 'call me Tony' (you might have to think about that one...)
Gordon & Tony ...
being a famous vaudeville act popular last century?
the ones who were preceded by the other double act of ....
Maggie & Major?
Maggie and Major ...
... weren't they the ones who paid off the Country's debts, streamlined public services by getting rid of all the non jobs and built up a decent gold reserve - whilst lowering taxes so people could choose what to spend their money on rather than having it spent for them?
They were just typical politicians
At the time, they were as hated as Tony & Gordon were later!
People remember the bits they want to remember and forget the bits they prefer to forget. It's human nature, but if any politician were as good as people remember them to be, they would still be in power, and if the others were as bad as other people think, they would be out at first call.
Hmmm... that bit sounds familiar!
I disagree, people are just gullible ...
... I never voted for change, I saw through Bliar from the start - I knew we had come through the "growing pains" and were just starting to pick up with a really strong economy, the only thing that amazed me was how strong it was - so that it endured enough of Brown's abuse to allow Bliar to con the mugs in to a third (and fatal) term!
Back to the magpies then
I saw a solitary one this morning and made a point of not only saluting it but saying 'morning Mr Magpie, Mrs Magpie, Ms Magpie, Master Magpie & Mistress Magpie (which in hindsight should have just been Miss)'. So having covered my bases I think I'm in for some good luck and I'm using it for a win by Miami in the NFL this evening (we're leading at the mo but usually throw it away in the 4th quarter - maybe I should pop out to see if I can spot more magpies..)
Since you ask ...
So those who voted for change, and got rid of Margaret Thatcher, were gullible????
Better to leave it there I think! There will be no agreement on this so better not to try.
Yup! and actually Maggie had aleady gone due to her own "Ides of March"
But, as you say, lets agree to differ on this one!
Go Packers!
8 - 0 this year ..... Superbowl here we come!!
Wife gets me a new T-shirt sent over every few years and oddly I've never seen anyone else wearing one here!
Go Dolphins!
1-7 this year..... But at least we won last night.... We might yet make the playoffs - and a fleet of flying pigs were seen in the South of England!
I'm not sure there will be many Fins t-shirts being worn in Miami at this rate!

Oh Gods...
Well breaking a mirror to me is x years bad luck, where x is the number of shards it has broken into.
I can't cross on stairs, walk on cracks, have the volume on an odd number, step on the middle of 3 steps on the small stairs at work, drink certain drinks using my right hand... I think I have wandered into OCD however.
Oddly I CAN open an umbrella indoors, as I read in a book the basis for that is 'it offends the Sun God', so I had a chat with him and he said it was fine, so no problems opening umbrellas indoors.
