Changing User Name Display

I understand why so many people want to be anonymous and would like to use a different name for public consumption than my own in future.

I believe that it is impossible to change the user name and I guess I would have to set up a new account. Is that right? If I did set up a new account how would I keep my personal details private?

Change Username

Hello Frances,

No, it isn't possible for a user to change their own username.

I wonder why you want to use a different name? My username is my real name and I don't see any reason to change it. I could understand it if you were changing names through marriage etc.

It is possible, on any posting, to "Make this post anonymous" by ticking the box so I don't see any need to have a different name just to be anonymous.  There's nothing to stop you simply registering another name if you want to but obviously yor history would stay linked to your current username.

Regards

Roger Neale

Names can be changed... behind the scenes

Thanks for bringing this point to our attention, Frances. It's something that was thrown up when we moved to the new Drupal system last June and user IDs that people had kept to themselves were suddenly broadcast across the site.

It is possible to change your AccountingWEB user name, but only by people with administrator rights to the system. If you would send your user name request to us at editor@accountingweb.co.uk (or post it below), we can make the change for you (after confirming that it's not a bogus request, so please include a company name or contact number).

Since the name is going to be in the public domain anyway, you might as well post your request here and we can act on it today.

I'll have a word with our production guru to see if it's possible to extend the name-changing facility to members -  you've also reminded me that I keep meaning to change "jstokdyk" to "John Stokdyk".

Why a username?

When this new site was set up there was a huge debacle over the anonymity feature being removed and old anonymous postings became named. Then some other more techy problems crawled out of the woodwork, e.g. (from memory) if you printed an anonymous post it added the name on the print.

I and a lot of others lost faith in AWeb at that point and set up an anonymous name just in case AWeb messed up again.

This isn't foolproof, if AWeb have your real contact details there is still something that could leak out.

We will always try to protect your anonymity

I just wanted to come on and respond to the above post: we will always protect your identity and never use your details for anything other than to identify you if you ever contact us.

The only way other members will be able to identify you is by your posting style and frequency or if you give away details which might identify you.  We would never 'leak' anything out.  I hope this goes some way to assuage any fears any of you might have over the protection of your identity on AccountingWEB.co.uk.
