The Apprentice: What do you make of it this time?
As I've posted in a a separate blog, hopes for a trilling series involving Big Four-trained Edward Hunter were dashed in the first episode as he manfully strode to the forefront and showed himself to be a jargon-spewing dimwit.
Inevitably he was the first out the boardroom door, robbing us of weeks of entertainment and opportunities to discuss the accountant psyche.
What did you think of Edward's performance in the first episode, and will you be watching the rest of the new series?
Are they doing something with budgie food then?
Or are you letting slip your Irish ancestry!
"jargon-spewing dimwit"
And the rest! ;-)
Mark
Trilled to the core
Ho! Ho!
Sorry about the spelling error. It's a fair cop, OGA, but now you've pointed it out I think I'd better leave it for the rest of the community to see and appreciate.
Meanwhile, other AccountingWEB members led by Jason Dormer have taken Edward Hunter's performance apart in an Apprentice Any Answers thread. You'll find a few more choice comments there, Mark.
Mark Lee is also hiding his own light under the bushel, I feel - there's yet more on the topic on his Accountant jokes and fun blog (including a link to Edward's audition video).
Latest Apprentice
This latest bunch on the apprentice don't seem to be too hot to me. I realise they aren't generally selecting "Britain's brightest business brains" anyway but in previous years I've felt that one or two have them have been pretty good. I'm not sure if I can say that yet this year. It's always entertaining though and makes good TV. I'm not sure how much mileage there would be in another series after this one though............the tasks are all very similar to previous years..........
Very Impressed
-Hi
My Husband owns a medium sized waste disposal business with two other directors Weee Solutions Ltd who are also extremely qualified in this area and they have a very large warehouse. It might look easy on telly but you really need to know the prices and values of junk, how quick you can dispose of it for what value and the cost of storage until the market changes so you get the best deal, and it is not always obvious . This waste needs to be stored and there are large overheads to take into account. It is extremely difficult to price ,and there are professionals in this area that still find this difficult,
I thought this was a extremely difficult task and they were actually very good considering none of them had any experience in this area. So yes I am impressed . It is very easy to laugh, but could any of us do any better. Every one on it makes the comment they were laughing at others in the previous series but realised it is not harder then it looks

Waste
I have 2 members of staff who catch the train to work & whose journies are regularly disrupted because the signalling cabling has been stolen! So I hate to be Mrs Grumpy of South Yporkshire but I think the BBC were irresponsible in highlighting how much money these materials are worth.

Judith ...
... I understand your sentiments, but do you really think those likely to steal things don't already know what things are worth stealing? In any case they will be too busy out on the rob to watch telly!
'The Apprentice'?
Bring me up to speed here so that I may particpate in this thread: when, exactly does this show appear on BBC4?
Nicking copper...
I agree - the thieves know the value already and watch the commodities markets so they know when it's worth going out. A few years back when copper was last high, someone removed the whole of the telephone wiring from my aunt's village while disguised as BT blokes and left them all without service for a week while BT sourced some more.
Jobs
Wots a 'community accountant' when its at ome?. Is it a 'Northern' thing?
Theft
Hi
Don,t want to be serious here but not everyone is this business is linked to the black market. If you are dealing with most waste you must have a SEPA licence . If a company our individual is disposing of waste they will receive a certificate.
Yes of course there is a black market , but there is in every business including ours. These guys might steel, but the waste disposal company would be breaking the law for receiving stolen property. There is more to waste then copper , for example medical equipment , computers. Nearly everything can be strip down and resold.
I am joking here Every builder or tradesman already knows copper is valuable , so maybe it the professionals that have stole the cables because they have just found out from the BBC that waste has some value . Maybe it was an accountant, Marketing executive, or even a lawyer.

Apprentice
I was warmed by Lord Sugar and several of the candidates showing how highly they regarded accountants in general.
People may joke about accountants, but deep down we generate a lot of respect through being trustworthy & honest.
Ed should've used that to his advantage & not be defensive. He already had a colourful personality and that in itself said he wasn't a grey accountant.
