Alex Feakes (Lib Dem), Lewisham West & Penge

Feakes got involved in politics as a physics student at Imperial College. After qualifying as an accountant and working in tax consultancy with PwC he worked for Network Rail before setting up his own film and video company. In 2005 he gained second place for the Lib Dems in Lewisham West and hopes to go one better in the reshaped Lewisham West & Penge constituency.

As a well drilled, media-friendly candidate, Feakes supports the four-point Lib Dem platform of fairer taxes, investment in education, rebalancing the economy and political reform.

Asked what he thought was the most pressing taxation issue in the election, he replied: “That the poorest earners pay more in tax as a proportion of their income that the richest earners - this would be tackled by raising the personal allowance to £10,000 and closing some of the reliefs at the top end - eg higher rate tax relief on pension contributions and moving towards taxing capital gains at the marginal rate again rather than the current low rate.”

His accountancy training, he added, “Gives me a critical eye on public sector finances - I'm just coming to the end of a four-year term chairing the local authority's Public Accounts Scrutiny Committee... I don't think they were used to such scrutiny from an elected member!”
