Expenses expert David Vine examines the cost of travel expenses to British businesses and offers a few tips on cutting costs and the necessity of being pragmatic..

The figures make for some interesting reading. British businesses and organisations are paying in the region of £2.8bn for employees' business travel and accommodation claims. Nearly 50% of all employee expense claims in the UK were for travel, with just over 6% spent on hotel bills.

It is little wonder it's the first budget to be slashed when companies try to find quick ways to cut costs.

In total, UK employees drove an estimated 7.3bn miles on business in 2007, with the average expense-claiming employee driving 1,936 miles (in addition to normal commuting), took 2.5 train journeys and 0.5 plane trips.
