Aweb unuseable - intrusive EasyJet ad ...
Posted by Anonymous on Wed, 10/06/2009 - 11:22
Far too easy to trigger by mistake
Takes up the majority of the page and DOES NOT DISAPPEAR on 'mouseout' event - requires specific close action - not good !!

What EasyJet ad? All I get is a Vodafone ad.
Me too - yesterday
It was troubling me yesterday - advert seemed to spread over half the screen with no input from me. Has gone today, thank goodness.
Trial
Hello folks
Thanks for your feedback. We are trialing this particular style of advertising for a brief period. The easyjet ad campaign is running for 10 days, so hang on in there! We know it has been a pain, and we are sorry - you never know until you try as they say!
There is a 'close' button within the ad in the meatime. That should get rid of it for the moment!
"We are trialing this particular style of advertising for a brief period. "
Not a brief enough period, I'm afraid.
Perhaps you should tell SleazyJet that it is going to lose them customers from the AWeb community.
Are you like me ?
When I get adverts popping up and getting in the way of what I actually want to be doing, I make a mental note never to give my business to the firm concerned.
Call it bloody minded if you will, but that's the effect they have on me.
Mind you, I'd have to be pretty desparate to use EasyJet - sort of Wooolworths with wings - cheap and nasty, and if the "airline" programme on TV was anything to go by, about as customer friendly as a Revenue Inspector with piles.
Be nice to sites - be nice to us !
I run AdBlock Plus but only block annoying ads ... I am aware that sites such as AW derive revenue from the ads.
GRRRR it's come back again
I thought it had gone but it's come back again and now it is attacking me from both the side and top of the screen.
Hate them
AWeb - get rid of these pop up windows.
They do not do you credit.
As a basically textual web site the intrusion of popups across the page is a sign of BAD MANNERS on your part!
Get Rid of it
Dear AWEB ... Please get rid of this annoying ad ... and NEVER think about intrusive pop up Ads like this ever again .... they just annoy the users ... and have a negative effect !
At least it's not RyanAir
They'd probably try to charge you for watching it!
We are listening
This was a trial and it is unlikely we will use this format in this combination again. We have previously turned away revenue because the ads were too intrusive. However, as all of you in business will appreciate, the market demands that we continue to talk to clients and trial new formats to meet their needs without degrading the user experience. In this case it was not a good one.
For the remainder of this trial we have capped the number of times a visitor will see the ad in any one session to two, and we have replaced the version that opens unprompted with a version that you have to roll over to initiate. You will also see only the sky or the banner - not both.
Thanks for all the feedback.
@ Gina
Well done for listening.
Can you find a way of passing on this skill to the decision makers at HMRC please.
Adverts
I don't seem to have any problems with AWEB's advertising but it might be because I use Firefox with the AdBlockPlus add-in, and all popups are disallowed by default.
It tells me that of 33 blockable items on this page, 8 are blocked by default.
It is also a breeze to block http://www.accountingweb.co.uk/anyanswers/voda* if I chose to.
Which makes me wonder how firms with business models which revolve around on-line advertising survive.
So. If you were trying to reach me / spam me, too bad. =]

Not long now
Hi everyone,
As we mentioned before, this is part of a ten day trial and I have been reliably informed that we are entering the second week now. This means there should only be about four more days to go before the end of the trial.
Thanks for your patience.
But I just tried it out
And he ripped his shirt off and danced around.
Ho hum, back to work!
Firefox
Why not switch to Firefox, Phil?

( looking at Ms Benneyworth and raising an eyebrow... )
Re Why not switch to Firefox, Phil?
I did that with my home system and found it inferiror in other ways.
Firefox
Really???
How so?
Firefox OK, annoying ads NOK
I use Firefox and think it's great - seems secure, quick and user-friendly.
And I agree with those who've asked for the ads that spread out over the whole page when you move a mouse across them, to be zapped. Sorry Gina and Rebecca, but they (the ads, not the users) are a pain in the neck!

Probably get shot
for saying it but try posting a load of articles and running into this lot. At 2am because you're just a tad busy / under pressure etc. (Finance Bill with 5 weeks short of normal time to get under my belt etc blah blah) (Absolutely no kidding - it really was both 2am (quick sleep) then 6am when they appeared).
So I'm with you guys on this one. It's just that I was at a bit of loose end in the 5 mins before my lecture started. Some lecturers pace up and down, some are rigid with fear, and I just thought...."I wonder".....I read the ad for the first time instead of swearing at it under my breath and then did a bit of clicking and thought I would share it with you....woman of a certain age I'm afraid... but he would have to be a bit more "fit"(catching from my kids) to really interest me. Now Sean Bean, that would do it... oh dear I would not be fit to lecture...have to go for a lie down.
Emily
Are you using the AdBlockPlus add-on? That and the inbuilt popup stopper should nix most ads.
Flaming typical!
I've been ignoring that ad all week before I read Rebecca's post, and now I thought I might just take a peek - for research purposes, obviously - it's gone.
Sean Bean? Perhaps a few years ago, but not now. Make it the British and Irish Lions team - but only if they wear a number higher than 3!
It got to me too
So much so that I'm about to book a flight with the Irish one. Enjoying my first venture on the new site though - looks good and easy to move around. Well done all.
New layout - yuck!!
Not only Easyjet is making this site unuseable.
Now the proprieters are with their new layout and web design.
Seems to be becoming a habit for them - this shooting yourself in the foot!
No we're still the same old AccountingWEB
We understand that some are not thrilled with the change, but the benefits are many. We have a much better search facility and lots of new content options. Personally I'm thrilled with the news feed that means we can take news from any organisation that produces an RSS feed... (went a bit techie there). I like the new "clean" view myself. As with all new developments, there are a couple a teething probalems we will have to sort out, but on the whole we hope you will grow to love it!

Hope!
Is that all you have left?
