Digital Dictation is gaining ‘mainstream technology’ status in the accountancy sector – are you for or against it?

53% of UK accountants surveyed are using Digital Dictation; and 72% of the remainder are considering investing in it for 2010. On the other hand, opposers of this technology believe it to be expensive and disruptive to business….

In comparison to the legal market, Digital Dictation is a relatively new concept for accountants, or at least that was the assumption. To the contrary,  a recent survey carried out by the accountancy market leader for digital dictation systems has revealed that amongst UK accountants  as many as 53% of accountants surveyed  are already using Digital Dictation within their practices; and 72% of the remainder state that investment in this technology is a serious consideration for 2010.
With the majority of respondents having swapped traditional tape-based dictation for digital dictation, 63% of those using this technology have been doing so for over a year, and the remainder are either currently trialling such software or have had a digital dictation system in place for about three months or so.
However, the practices not currently using and/or not planning to use Digital Dictation in the future believe this technology to be expensive and disruptive to business. Interestingly, many providers today, like nFlow (www.nflow.com) with their cloud based nFlowLive.com solution, are able to install Digital Dictation Software without even stepping into a firm’s office, and increased productivity and efficiency gains mean some practices see ROI within the year. So is it that accountants are not yet fully aware of the benefits of a Digital Dictation system, or are they simply happy with tapes and self-typing?
80% of the respondents in favour of digital dictation technology cite ‘increasing staff productivity’ and ‘reducing administration costs’ as their key drivers for adoption with 10% of respondents looking for increased mobility through this technology. This said, the survey has highlighted some controversial opinions, especially in terms of the technology’s ability to deliver productivity increases and cost reductions.
