RSM appoints record number of trainees

24 Aug - RSM has appointed 350 trainees across all locations in the UK – expanding the total headcount of the firm by 10%.

The group of trainees will start their RSM careers will study towards their professional qualifications.

David Gwilliam, RSM’s chief operating officer, said: ‘The record number of trainees supports our commitment to attracting, developing and retaining talent across all areas of the business. The level of appointments reflects recent growth in our businesses, and equates to a 10 per cent increase in headcount across the firm – which is a significant milestone.’

Menzies breaks the £40m barrier

25 Aug - Menzies LLP has recorded a turnover of £40m.

Following the merger with Harris Lipman in July 2015 the firm’s 2015-16 financial figures reveal the firm has hit £40m for the first time, a 20% increase on last year’s results. 

The firm has increased the headcount by a third, hiring 100 new recruits to the team, including 37 trainees. Additionally, the firm has promoted 36 internal promotions, while 67 people are developing through the firm’s professional training academy.  

Julie Adams, senior partner at Menzies LLP, said: “The firm has grown not only by acquisition but organically too, which is a testament to the hard work and commitment of the entire team. Due to the merger and additional specialisms that we have developed, we’ve opened our existing clients up to a wider range of services while allowing the firm to pursue business across a broader spectrum.

PwC drives tech specialist recruitment

22 Aug – PwC’s risk assurance arm anticipates a 1,000 strong technology specialist hiring spree by 2020 in order to keep up with the increasing client demand for regulatory and cyber security services.

Speaking about the firm’s technology plans, PwC’s Hemione Hudson said: “Our new technology specialists will span from associates to partners and will consist of over 600 external hires, over 400 transfers from around PwC’s international network and over 200 cyber security, data and technology graduate recruits.”

Hudson explained how clients’ business models have been “disrupted” due to the increase of regulatory scrutiny on technology risks and the increasing cyber threat.

The firm’s graduate scheme will assist with the majority of the recruitment. The graduates gain a professional qualification after attaining knowledge on cyber security, data and technology in the three year programme.

KPMG sets up in Bristol office

23 AugKPMG has relocated 450 members of staff to new offices in Bristol.

The Big Four firm has taken up residency in the grade II listed building, occupying the first, second, third and part of the ground floor. The move brings the firm back to where they were originally based in Bristol – with the firm’s first lodging in Queen Square nearly 200 years ago.

Andrew Hodgson, senior partner at KPMG Bristol, said: "We consulted with our clients and colleagues to define what we wanted – we have increased the size of our office but reduced the number of individual desks and replaced them with open spaces, booths and meeting rooms for colleagues to collaborate better together across departments, and with clients."

Tax specialist becomes partner at 26

19 Aug Craig Harman has been promoted to partner of Tunbridge Wells firm Perrys at the tender age of 26.

But Harman is not the youngest partner the firm has ever had. That accolade goes to CEO Stewart Pope who retains his record by four days. Harman’s is heavily involved in the firm’s Wills and Probate work.

Speaking about his achievement, Harman said: “I am delighted to be entering this new phase in my career with Perrys. The accountancy industry is constantly developing due to the ever-moving tax legislation, which, given the current political uncertainty, looks set to continue for the foreseeable future.”

Moore Stephens appoints restructuring and insolvency partner

16 Aug Moore Stephens has strengthened its restructuring and insolvency practice at their Birmingham office by bringing in Lee Causer as a partner.

Causer joins the firm with over 19 years’ experience in the corporate restructuring sector in the Midlands. Causer qualified as an accountant during his four year stint working for Ernst and Young. Recently, he served as director if AlixPartners, a consulting and business advisory firm.

Jeremy Wilmont, Moore Stephens’ head of restructuring and insolvency, said: “Lee has completed a broad range of advisory assignments on behalf of lenders and corporates, and has significant experience as administrator, liquidator and supervisor, and we are confident that he will make a valuable contribution to the business.”

GT expands business risk services

11 Aug - Grant Thonton has taken on Devesh Mehta, who joins the business risk services team as a partner.  

Mehta brings 18 years over 18 years’ experience in the financial services industry, with leadership experience gained while holding the CFO role at Nomura International.

Commenting on his appointment, Mehta said: “My primary focus will be to lead and build on the firm's existing Finance and Risk Advisory offering, and support our client base in successfully navigating the ever changing, highly regulated financial services market.”

Hall Morrice appoints eight new staff members

11 Aug – Hall Morrice has appointed eight new members of staff, after it rolled out its business development role earlier this year.

The Aberdeen-based firm has employed new staff members across the team, with the most senior position being taken by former KPMG employee Aaron Williams, who takes the role of audit and accounts manager.

Speaking about his new role, Williams said: “Working across such a varied portfolio is a challenge, but one that I am looking forward to embracing. I look forward to working with the Hall Morrice team to continue providing the high level of service that our clients expect.”   

The firm has also expanded its payroll team, taking on Irene Walker and Maria Marcus, and CA students Ashleigh Welsh, Catherine Freeman and Michael Smith have taken on new roles within the firm, as well.

RSM appoints consulting practice associate director

9 Aug –Mark Wood has joined RSM from PWC as the firm’s associate director in consulting practice.

Wood served as a risk assurance team senior manager at PWC for nearly 13 years. Prior to PWC, Wood worked for five years at Deloitte specialising in public and financial sectors.

Matthew Humphrey, RSM Partner and Head of Governance and Risk Consulting Service Group in the UK, said: “Mark is a real asset to the team, and we’re excited to have him on board. He brings an extensive range of governance and risk management experience that will strengthen our offering and help our growing portfolio of clients across the North.”

UHY Hacker Young announce audit promotions

3 Aug - UHY Hacker Young has promoted a number of employees in its audit and accounts team – with the most senior promotion being at the director level.

David Allum takes the director position, after joining the firm in 2002 as an audit senior. Commenting on his new role, Allum said: “I am excited to take on a whole new role and help to develop with the company while creating my own portfolio of clients; furthering our existing success. It will be great to develop new skills during this positive period of growth.”

Also celebrating  success, Alex Hoctor and Daniel Grant-Hunter have been promoted to audit seniors, Nicola Cottee, Daniel Waymont and Rebekah Harrison have been promoted to audit supervisors and Julie Parry has been promoted to audit and accounts manager.

The accounting firm has also uprooted its Nottingham office and relocated to new premises in the city centre, bringing together the two teams previously separated in different locations. Speaking about the move, UHY Hacker Young’s MD Phil Oliver said: “By bringing our team together under one roof, we are able to better leverage our expertise and ultimately deliver an even better service to our existing clients and push the business forwards.”

Duncan & Toplis expands probate team

8 Aug - Duncan & Toplis has appointed Graham England to join its probate team.

England will handle wills, assisting with powers of attorney and advising on probate, tax and inheritance matters.

Graeme Hills, Head of Legal Practice, said: “Graham joins our team at an exciting time. It has been a very promising start since we launched the probate service and his years of experience and local knowledge will help us offer even more to our clients.

PKF Littlejohn appoints tax partner promotion

4 Aug PKF Littlejohn has promoted Catherine Heyes as tax partner.

Heyes joined the firm as a senior tax manager in 2014, focusing on share schemes, restructuring and R&D claims. This latest promotion increases PKF’s number of partners to 36.

Commenting on Reye’s appointment, Chris Riley, head of tax at PKF Littlejohn said: “Since she joined the firm, Catherine has consistently demonstrated a depth of expertise to assist clients … but also the wider commercial consequences.”

PwC bolsters healthcare practice

1 Aug – PwC continues to invest in its health practice, appointing four new partners.

Featured in the Big Four’s healthcare promotions are Yvonne Mowlds, a forensic services partner leading a healthcare-related investigation team, Rod Maxwell, a Manchester-based consulting partner, Tom Hampshire, a Midlands-based consulting partner, Damien Ashford, who had previously assisted NHS organisations and public sectors through challenging turnaround situations.    

Quentin Cole, health industries leader at PwC, said: “We are continuing to invest in our healthcare, pharma and life sciences partnership team to ensure we have the scale of leadership and experience needed to lead work with UK and international clients who are tackling fundamental challenges, but also facing new opportunities to transform.”
