The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has launched a new ad campaign warning accountants and lawyers to report corporate scams earlier.

The campaign slogan, 'call us, because you don't want us calling you' appeals to those who discover fraud among their clients to come forward and involve the SFO as soon as possible, rather than waiting for a knock at their door or a conversation at the police station.

This will be the first time that the SFO has used paid for advertising to promote its cause. The organisation said it was under increased public pressure to gather more information as a result of the credit crunch.

SFO director Richard Alderman recently called for more City whistleblowers to step forward, but the SFO now believes that intermediaries such as accountants could offer a greater insight into corruption issues faced by their clients.

Alderman said: “Our campaign to uncover more fraud continues and running advertisements aimed at those who can help us is part of that. Companies can be innocent victims and if that is the case we appeal to the companies themselves and their advisers to come to us and help us help them investigate what happened and resolve it.”

Advertisements will be run in a cross section of industry publications this week.
