Age discrimination is rife in accounting and continues to be fuelled by generational and cultural shifts across the profession, according to a recent survey.

A study by found that more than half the accountants surveyed thought ageism was alive and kicking in the profession and nearly half said people found it harder to get a new job or promotion once they hit 40.

Respondents felt bosses preferred to recruit younger professionals because their salary expectations were lower and they were prepared to put in longer hours.
