The roles of finance, IT and HR are often considered to be ‘back office’ departments, but also carry major responsibility, explains Rod Newing.
In two earlier articles Newing looked at the overall need for organisations to keep costs under tight control, without damaging their ability to benefit from the eventual upturn. He also looked at how individual functions can contribute to the overall objective, starting with sales marketing, operations and the supply chain.
“They should be more than mere administrative support functions and play a much more strategic role,” says Darren Hassall, director of Ellingham Darcy Recruitment. “Department managers must be more proactive than reactive in their relationships with the other functions. To prepare for growth they must ensure their team devises a plan in which preventative rather than corrective measures are taken.”
