While passing accountancy exams with flying colours is a dream for any student, for one Indian girl it meant more than that.

The daughter of an autorickshaw driver in Mumbai, 24-year-old Prema Jayakumar came first in the All India Chartered Accountancy exams.

Jayakumar received 607 out of 800 marks in the challenging exams, with her 22-year-old brother also passing them with top marks.

For Jayakumar, whose family lives in a small one-room tenement in Malad, Mumbai, education wasn’t something to be taken for granted.

“We knew that education is our only means to change the lives we have lived,” she told Indian press.

“Now that my brother and I have reached this stage, we would like to make the most of it and give our parents a good life.”

Jayakumar also completed her M.Com  in Mumbai University while preparing for her CA exams.

Jayakumar said she owes her success to her father Jayakumar Peruma, who worked as an autorickshaw driver to pay for his children’s education.

“He ensured that I was never deprived of education because of lack of money. Now I want my father, who has worked so hard so that I can realise my dreams, to take some rest,” she said.

Well done!

It must be a very proud day for her and her family.

It's always good to see people progressing on the basis of their merits rather than 'who-you-know'.

A bright, well-deserved future beckons, methinks!
