Steve RothContinuing our How Did I Get Here? series,Stephen Roth describes his route to our very own AccountingWEB.

1. Current job title

Managing editor, AccountingWEB

2. Describe your initial training within the profession

My first job as a journalist was with the Croydon Guardian. Although I was far older than most new journalists, I was lucky in coming across an editor that valued age and life experience. Mindyou, even age and experience cannot always get you through. Almost my first job was to interview a prize winner called Ann Organ (honest). Having tried unsuccessfully to keep a straight face on the telephone, I had to demote the story to a picture and caption.

3. What positions have you held?

After the Guardian I moved to a daily newspaper and then turned freelance. Some of my freelance work included a race between a horse and cart and a sports car through central London - I was on the horse and cart and writing Christmas ad copy for Cola Cola in the Phillipines.

4. What advice would you give to someone thinking of entering the profession?

Always expect the unexpected

5. Is there a significant event you can tell us about which had an impact on your career?

I once demolished a works canteen with a fork lift truck - while people were having dinner. It convinced me that my future lay in non manual tasks.

6. What is your overall view of the finance industry and the people in it ?

Money and the way we use it is central to almost everything we do. Having an accountant for a father, I think accountancy gets a bad press.

7. Who most inspired you to get where you are today?

I once read an obituary for a journalist that had died unexpectedly. The article was the extraordinarily moving. I realised that if I could write an article that powerful, I would have created something that someone somewhere would remember always. That is why I became a journalist and is still my ultimate ambition.

8. What has been your greatest achievement?

My son, Alexander.
