What caught my eye when reviewing the National Audit Office report on HMRC and tax fraud was that 26% of successful HMRC prosecutions involved lass that £10,000 I repeat less than £10,000 whilst only 10% involved £1m or more.

Now don’t get me wrong I am not saying that HMRC shouldn’t pursue these cases, of course they should collect all the tax that is correct and rightly due but why is it that small business and taxpayers are disproportionately targeted for prosecution?

icpaIs it because HMRC like to tweet and trumpet seemingly endlessly about their successes, and wherever possible with pictures of criminal types they have brought to task whilst quietly failing to recover the taxes that are due from large corporations and multi nationals? Are they now so obsessed with spin and selling their worth to government and taxpayers alike that they spent their time going for the easy option?

I know what I think.
