Headlines come and go , markets fluctuate as newsfeeds update but in the long run everything settles down. Or does it ? On a macroeconomic scale things usually end up on an even keel after each crisis passes but what about the fallout for SMEs who are undertaking business in volatile parts of the world , or even perhaps closer to home ?

Whether your clients are simply importing or have a joint venture either with a foreign partner or in a foreign country it is important that you , as their business adviser, flag up the risks. Often the business owner will be oblivious to geo-political risks because there's never been a problem or they are blinded by the glitter of forthcoming profits.

Just because there is a risk doesn't mean it is beyond management , perhaps by making contingencies or taking out a robust insurance policy . You don't need to be an expert , all you have to be is the person who tugs at the client's arm with mild restraint and makes them think twice before they make their next move.

They'll be lost for words how to thank you when it saves their business from impolding while they are tucked up in bed.....
