GadgetWatch: Computer defibrillator on a stick
Created 31/05/2009 - 19:27

is one of the most useful gadgets we’ve seen so far in 2009. This unassuming-looking USB stick combines automatic daily backups – there’s no installation required, you just plug it in to a spare USB port and it does its stuff – with easy system recovery if your PC fails due to a crash of its hard disk or corruption of its Windows operating system (sorry, it’s not yet Mac-compatible – but they’re working on it!). You can even use it to back up SQL databases.

BackinaFlash comes with a built-in operating system, so you can simply boot-up your computer from it if all else fails. It also has a Microsoft Office-compatible software suite that can be used to create documents, spreadsheets and presentations. But far more important, your files are already inside the device from the daily back-ups, so you can open and edit them - and surf the Web, send and receive e-mail, do instant messaging, listen to music, play movies, and more, and all without calling on the computers’ operating system, hard drive or software – or the files lost inside the computer.

There are other recovery tools that do this sort of thing, but not starting from $50, and not with this sort of easy plug-and-play useability. BackinaFlash devices come in four sizes, from 3.5 GB to 32.5 GB, which will satisfy the needs of most computer users. If you have a laptop or desktop PC that contains files not backed up daily onto a network you need one of these!
