IRIS was the first fully integrated tax and practice suite, and remains the market leader. Rather than aiming for all-encompassing sophistication, it tackles core practice functions in a straightforward way. John Stokdyk looks at how it is holding up against some increasingly powerful competitors.
Key features: IRIS Practice Management
Core functions The original integrated practice management suite runs on the same database as tax and accounts programs. Handles client and staff data, time & fees, billing, reporting, and marketing functions - all the things you would expect a practice management system to do.

Pros
● Integrated database (now available for Microsoft SQL Server) works as advertised - work tasks flow through to billing, client communications filed in their appropriate folders etc.
● Automated workflows operate across all practice and tax modules and are used to define costs and completion steps for each job. Workflows feed staff To Do lists and can support on-screen authorisation mechanism for billing, if desired.
● Standard workflows come as part of the package, but can be adapted to suit firm's own processes.
● WIP and tasks can be tracked against time budgets set for each client and job.
● Communications section within Client Maintenance lists related documents, notes and calls, providing a neat overview of where you stand with client.
● Automail module creates letters and emails quickly and easily - documents in Client list can be emailed from right-click mouse menu.
● Interactive Staff Planner (pictured above) links on screen calendars to workflow system.
Cons
● User interface is looking a little old fashioned - more attention has been devoted to SQL Server-.NET migration in recent years.
● Some users dislike complicated time & fees module.
● No native document management facilities, but integrates seamlessly with external Invu system.
● Relies on third party reporting tools rather than simplified mechanism for ordinary users.
