Gadget Watch: New generation digital video recorders

As you prepare your band’s entry in our (we know you are!) you’ll no doubt be wondering how best to capture the performance for YouTube. That’s where one of the new generation of digital video recorders comes in handy, so here are a couple of suggestions.

The coolest gadget around at the moment is probably the 2GB , a video recorder that looks a bit like a mobile phone. It captures up to 60 minutes of video in VGA (640 x 480) quality, not exactly Cinemascope, but it will do for YouTube. You can buy one for around £80 online. It comes with its own software that completely automates uploading your videos to YouTube, MySpace and other sites. And it comes in a variety of groovy colours and patterns. Flip have just launched a more expensive 4GB HD version that records in HD quality (1280 x 720 resolution). The Flip Ultra was awarded "No. 1 Travel Gadget 2008” on the Gadget Show this year.

A worthy competitor is the 2GB , which records two hours in VGA quality for £69, has bigger screen (2in instead of 1.5in on the Flip). Not sure how it gets twice as much video, at the same resolution, on the same amount of memory as the Flip! It too has built-in software which makes uploading to YouTube a piece of cake. So you get slightly more power for less money, but it doesn’t look so cool I’m afraid. It only comes in silver or pink – but if you’re pushed for time you can get one at Argos!
