Introduction
Identity and data thefts are endemic in the information age, as evidenced by frequent reports - particularly from government departments - of massive data losses and hardware thefts. Laws such as the Computer Misuse Act and Data Protection Act seem to add to the red tape burden on business, without doing much to combat criminal activities.

The authorities have their own data protection problems, and aren't going to do much to stop your information from being compromised, so the best thing you can do is to arm yourself with a good understanding of legal requirements and how to stop your information from falling into the wrong hands.
