Avalara expands Brazilian tax operation

Online tax software specialist Avalara took another step on the road to global expansion with the acquisition of a consortium of Brazilian companies.

Avalara has been working with local companies to beef up SuitePlus tax, an application it acquired last year. Those partners, previously known as SPL Fiscal, Keeptrue and TaxVision have been consolidated together with SuitePlus to become Avalara Brazil.

The combined offering fulfils the full range of tax compliance tasks required in Brazil and will be integrated into Avalara’s global Compliance Cloud platform.

What makes the deal interesting is the notoriously complex nature of Brazil’s tax system, which PwC estimated takes an average 2,600 hours a year for businesses to satisfy.

At the heart of the process is the Sistema Publico de Escrituracao Digital (SPED - or the public system of digital accounting in English), which requires companies to register each business invoice electronically on a government portal.

As AccountingWEB reported earlier this month, the Italian government has rolled out a similar invoice portal on a voluntary basis, following Portugal’s example and that of China, where the government has operated a mandatory “golden tax” online register for several years.

“It’s the way we’re all going,” Avalara vice president Richard Asquith told AccountingWEB. “That’s why we did the acquisition.”
