HMRC launches Hermes pay inquiry

Following a Guardian investigation, HMRC has launched an inquiry into the delivery company Hermes after complaints that its couriers were being paid below that national living wage.

Hermes had classed its couriers as self-employed, but their couriers complained that this meant they were unable to receive holiday or sick pay.

While a Hermes spokesperson said the company was “confident in the legality” of their self-employment model, HMRC’s executive charman Edward Troup said: “If we find that companies have misclassified individuals as self-employed, we will take all necessary steps to make sure they pay the appropriate tax, national insurance contributions, interest and penalties.”

Following this, the treasury secretary Jane Eillison announced that HMRC has launched a specialist unit to take “strong action where companies, to reduce their costs, force their staff down routes which deny them the employment rights and benefits they are entitled to”.

HMRC ends Concentrix contract early

HMRC will end its contract with tax credit contractor Concentrix six months early, The Independent reports.

A staff bulletin for the outsource company announced that HMRC will provide “permanent employment” to the Belfast-based staff Concentrix staff, “offering job security to them well beyond the scheduled expiry of the contract in May 2017”.

Transfer dates will be agreed in the next “few weeks”, Concentrix announced.

An HMRC spokesperson told the Independent: “Concentrix has begun discussions with their staff about this transfer. Those people moving to HMRC will be supported through further training, building on the improvements already delivered to the service we provide to our tax credits customers.”
