This Budget Day, AccountingWEB.co.uk teamed up with BDO Stoy Hayward and challenged members to guess how many times the chancellor would utter the word ‘downturn’.

We had hundreds of entries, from the conservative (once) to the downright impossible (112 times!).

The lucky winner was Rob Merrell, an accountant at Downham Morris & Co. in Stockport, who guessed correctly that ‘downturn’ would be said four times.

“I thought it was a wind up when I first got the call, I never win anything!” said Rob.

He admitted he was ‘delighted, shocked and amazed’ when he discovered he’d won, but was less enthusiastic about the Budget itself: “There wasn’t much in it to help small businesses, in fact the chancellor is turning the screw on them a little. Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if many of the higher earners jetted off to Switzerland and Monaco to avoid paying the large taxes”.

Rob wins £200 of Red Letter Day vouchers, kindly supplied by BDO Stoy Hayward.
