HMRC received a “record” 9.61m on-time tax returns this self assessment season, with a higher number filing online than in previous years.
10.34m people had to file 2011-2012 tax returns, with 93% filing on-time.
Of those who filed diligently, over 80% of these filed online, with the remainder sending returns on paper, hitting the 31 October deadline.
At the start of self assessment season, the Revenue urged taxpayers to achieve "inner peace" by filing on-time, an advertising campaign which appears to have done its job.
It appears most of you had a last-minute dash to the finish, as HMRC figures show the busiest day and hour was 4 - 5pm on 31 January, with 46,000 returns flying into the Revenue’s online portal during that time.
