The government's Plan for Growth report promises a package of initiatives to support the UK’s digital infrastructure, reports PublicTechnology.net.
Published alongside the Budget, on 23 March, the plan lays out a strategy to put the UK “on a path to sustainable, long-term economic growth”.
In a chapter on promoting growth in the digital and creative industries, the report reiterated plans for the deployment of superfast broadband to create the “best” network in Europe by 2015, together with the £530m in investment. It also confirmed all businesses in the Enterprise Zones announced by the Chancellor would have access to superfast broadband.
Citing the importance of mobile broadband, the report confirmed the government will also publish an implementation plan for the release of 500MHz of public sector radio spectrum. The move follows the government’s decision in December 2010 to instruct Ofcom to move ahead with the release of 800MHz and 2.6GHz spectrum.
The use of radio spectrum to improve mobile broadband access has gained increased momentum in recent months. In January, the regulator said it would open up frequencies used by mobile phone operators for SMS text messages and phone calls for use by 3G services – including mobile internet.
