Social media and cloud accounting are becoming an increasingly integrated part of accountants’ practices, according to Xero managing director Gary Turner.
In December, a survey of over 650 AccountingWEB members showed that 83% were already using online accounting applications, helping to streamline internal practice efficiency.
Over half of respondents also said it brought them new clients, showing that the cloud isn’t just for in-house benefits.
Turner said the increase in adoption of the cloud among accountants has skyrocketed in the last two to three years, moving especially fast in the last six months.
"If we had run this survey two to three years ago, I don't think the figures would be so pronounced. This aligns with our experience in the market; the momentum is beginning to pick up," he said.
Social media also has a big part to play, added Turner. For a practitioner not to have a web presence would exclude an important segment of their target market.
“My personal accountant is a strong advocate of social media and puts updates on their Facebook page. Their clients are more likely to be on Facebook and not reading an email that will be lost in a day,” he said.
With the increasing role the newly adopted cloud appears to be playing in practices UK-wide, it’s natural that existing and potential users will face questions and issues.
To address some of the issues practitioners are facing, AccountingWEB and Xero will team up to bring members a free webinar at 11am on 15 May.
Turner, senior Xero account manager Glen Foster, Xero-using practitioner Jon Gaunt and AccountingWEB community correspondent Rachael Power will be on hand during the day to answer any cloud questions or queries, and explain other cloud issues in more depth.
Apart from cloud security, how firms are using the cloud, which application is best for client comms and the pros and cons of online accounting, we'll also be answering questions from AccountingWEB members, who can either post a comment below or submit live text questions during the webinar.
Interested accountants can register for the webinar here, which will be hosted on the cloud app Google Hangouts.
