RTI spells the end of Payexcel

Payroll software developer Payexcel ceased trading after more than 10 years in business because it could not cope with the transition to RTI.

The company, which provided software based on Microsoft Excel, ceased trading in September. Its website explains that existing PAYExcel 2012 customers have been sent the 2012/13 Online Filing Workbook for forms P35 and P14. But it will not be around to cope with the new regime that starts in April 2013.

A Payexcel spokesperson confirmed that the company's closure was down to Real Time Information (RTI).

"Although we had hoped to incorporate RTI in the PAYExcel workbook for next year, it has proved impractical to do so and this led us to reluctantly cease trade," he said.

Payexcel software products are no longer available for purchase, he added.

Payexcel users will now need to find alternative payroll software arrangements to comply with the in-year PAYE efiling requirements.

"At the moment, the option is to use [HMRC's] Basic PAYE Tools, which is not only VERY basic but horrible to use or to use the 'free' tools from the likes of Sage," commented AccountingWEB member dd_uk. "Wonder how long they will be free?"

Sage commercial product manager Jonathan Cowan said he expects more struggling payroll software companies to come out of the woodwork and also explained Sage's decision to  stop developing its TAS Payroll product

"There are a great number of vendors who are being very quiet about the subject of RTI and this is causing concern. My advice would be to speak to your current software providers and find out more information, ask if they will be RTI compliant," he said.

"If you're not satisfied with your current vendor then you need to ask some questions and consider other options," he added.

Speaking about TAS Payroll , he said he felt confident Sage products could fulfill the needs of former customers.

"The situation between TAS and Payexcel is different as we gave customers more notice, and offered alternative Sage products and support that would help customers make the transition to RTI," he said.

"TAS has been part of the Sage family for many years now, but we have several payroll products and services in the market that provide better readiness for these changes and a better experience for users. With this in mind, we took the decision to no longer develop or sell TAS Payroll," he added.

Moneysoft

Moved to Moneysoft from Sage a few years ago and it is an excellent piece of software, they have already been in touch to say they will be RTI compliant.

Found it to be easier to use than Sage and at less cost.

Option to email pdf's to clients works well and is now done for all clients so saves postage.

Do 40 payrolls a month, a mix of weekly and monthly and CIS Returns

Moneysoft
I have used Moneysoft for a number of years and wouldn't even consider Sage (or Sage accounts etc for that). Moneysoft is, as endorsed by others an excellent product, ticks all the boxes, superb support and at the right price!

I've been using Earnie, now an Iris company, for years. They have supplied me with RTi-compliant software and I've been in the pilot scheme since July. I've got nothing but praise for the Earnie product and for their support staff.

Usual disclaimers.
