Nokia N97 and Android G1 raise the smartphone stakes

The year 2008 looks set to be a vintage one for sophisticated hand-held devices and smartphones, with Nokia and Google/T-1 seeking to challenge Apple's iPhone and the fast-growing BlackBerry range. And the mobile prospects for 2009 look even more tempting. John Stokdyk reports

In Barcelona this week, Nokia played a classic spoiler card by announcing the imminent arrival of its N97 model. With a tilting 3.5in screen and QWERTY keyboard, the N97 expands on the already impressive features in Nokia's N95 and N96 models to give the trendier iPhone a real run for its money.

Unlike the N96, which is a cutting-edge mobile phone, the N97 is described as "the world's most advanced mobile computer". Available in the first half of 2009, it combines a large 3.5in touch display with a full QWERTY...
