The merger was announced today of APS (Advanced Professional Solutions) and Billback Systems Pty Ltd. APS is a leading international developer and supplier of practice software to progressive accounting firms, while Billback Systems develops and markets a range of expense management and cost recovery systems predominantly to the legal services market. The combined APS Billback professional practice software business will turn over in excess of £16 million.

APS has offices in the UK, Australia and New Zealand while Billback has offices in the UK, Australia and the United States. The merger follows the acquisition of Billback Systems by APS’s Australian parent, Reckon Limited, in January 2009 for £8.5 million.

Established in 1991, APS is the primary practice software supplier to 22% of the Top 100 accounting firms in the UK, over 60% of the Top 50 firms in New Zealand and over 70% of the Australia’s Top 100 firms. With Billback providing expense management solutions to over 60% of the Top 100 law firms in Australia, 20% of the Top 50 law firms in the United States and 8 of the UK’s 15 largest firms, the combined group is now well established as a major player in both the accounting and legal markets.

APS CEO Brian Armstrong commented: “We were keen to bring the APS and Billback businesses together to ensure that maximum advantage could be gained for the accounting and legal sectors. With APS particularly strong in the accounting marketplace, Billback’s cost recovery and recently released expense management software provides us with strength in the legal sector. Billback, like APS, is a very profitable business, so we are well resourced to combine our business models and concentrate on enhancing our services to both accounting and legal clients.”

Mr. Armstrong added that “both companies have a strong track record of developing the right software on the right platforms for their target markets and we anticipate further advances in our combined product and service offering. APS’s Document and Email Management solutions will see an immediate expansion in our offering to the legal profession. Of particular interest will be the integration of the APS Business Intelligence solution, Advance Practice IQ with Billback enterprise expense management.”
