Businesses are being urged to reduce their carbon footprint by switching from paper to electronic payslips, but is this a practical way forward?

A Midlands-based payroll provider claims to have saved over £200,000 in postage and reduced its paper consumption by around 650,000 payslips per year by switching to e-payslips, and is now urging other businesses to do the same.

"Changing to an online format gets rid of the costs associated with printing to paper and the need to store copies. It's also easier for employees as they are securely stored online", said Dave Cooper, managing director of ESOS.

ESOS says e-payslips are a commercially attractive measure for employers that will help employees become more environmentally conscious and build a more positive company image, but is it really practical and would employees be comfortable receiving their payslips in this way?

Great idea
I think this is the way forward although there will always be some who don't like it. Currently I scan my payslip (barely legible!) and shred it in a small effort to diminish the piles of paper at home.

email payslips ARE the way forward
We run payroll for a number of clients and email ALL the payslips to them and have had no problems since doing this for the last three years. It is definitely the way forward and eco friendly:)

Why wouldn't you?
So much in & out is electronic so why wouldn't you do the same with payslips?

Payslips
We offered this option when we changed Payroll systems 2 years ago, 70% of the staff took it up and this saves a lot of time. Of the remaining 30% they are mostly the younger element of the company who are into Facebook, e banking etc but still want a paper payslip. Find that very strange!

Opera 2
I've been trying to get payroll to sort this for a while

Does anyone know if it's do-able in Pegasus Opera 2?

Congratulations to ESOS

Well done to those at ESOS for making such great strides forward with Epayslips.

There are still only a handful of payroll outsourcing companies offering epayslips. While initiall sceptical we are launching our epayslip service shortly.

I think the nirvana of 100% uptake with an individual firm is still a long way off yet
