The business of social networking

Social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter were originally designed for people seeking a bit of fun online, but with such massive user figures (it’s estimated that more than 120 million log onto Facebook each day, and Twitter is believed to attract some 6 million unique monthly visitors), business owners now see them as valuable resources to boost sales.

Most people don't respond well to in-your-face selling and that's particularly true on social networks. Firms that overtly promote their products or services are not well received.

6 million unique monthly visitors

Great article and good advice from @WilliamBuist as ever.

I note the ref in opening para that "Twitter is believed to attract some 6 million unique monthly visitors". This is likely to be a gross understatement of those who use twitter. Many (most?) of the regular users do not visit the twitter website itself - at least not very often. Instead we use one or more of the available third party applications that make it much easier to use and benefit from twitter.
