False economy class: are the budget airlines worth it? By Rob Lewis

The pricing strategy of modern airlines is almost as complicated as the fare structure of our national rail network. Passengers can be confronted with a confusing array of options, without knowing what they’re really paying for. Working out what value you’re getting can be a time-consuming business.

It has to be said, airlines aren’t stupid, and there isn’t a huge transparency in flight comparisons.
