Firms slam European red tape reduction claims

Claims from the European Commission that "significant progress is being made" in its Better Regulation programme has been met with skepticism by small firms. Dan Martin reports.

Martin Smith, European spokesman for the Forum of Private Business (FPB), said that many of the regulations being withdrawn or simplified had "little or no impact on small businesses in the UK".

"They are often out of date or irrelevant," he said.

Smith added that the business community was still being "strangled" by the creation of fresh, ill conceived and costly regulations.
