Anyone who wants to know more about mid-market accounting and ERP software should pay a visit to AccountingWEB's IT Zone to download free software Lab Tests exploring the strengths and weaknesses of Pegasus Opera II and Microsoft Great Plains version 8.0.

Compiled by consultant editor David Carter, the detailed software Lab Tests are recognised as the industry's most authoritative source of independent advice on ERP and accounting software selection.

Great Plains version 8.0
Working with Great Plains reseller Advantage Business Systems, Carter recently ran his eye over version 8 of Microsoft's mid-market financial system Great Plains. Carter found that the product has prospered within the Microsoft fold. An new Analytical Accounting function overcame previous concerns about the product's multi-segment nominal code structure and further tools such as SQL Server Analysis Services data cubes mean GP "is now well equipped to handle the reporting requirements of major organisations," he concluded.

Any doubts that remain about Great Plains revolve around transaction entry rather than around reporting, with Carter still unhappy about the layout of some of the application's transaction screens.

Pegasus Opera II version 4.0 - Lab Test update
David Carter first reviewed Pegasus Opera II in 2003. Since then, the application has undergone a major upgrade to version 4.0. The update is based around the original test, which found Opera II to be a strong contender in its marketplace: easy to use while catering for the needs of sophisticated management accountants. Several new features have been added in 2005, which are documented in the Lab Test report.

Having installed more than 100 business systems, Carter based his Lab Test methodology on the test pack approach he recommends people use when they assess potential software purchases.

Each Lab Test examines around 15 separate functions in the areas of transaction processing, payments and management reporting. Each function is given a rating ranging from poor to excellent and the basis for each score is presented in a detailed checklist. The Lab Tests also include background information on the software author, an at-a-glance guide to the system's highlights and comment from the vendor on David's findings.

Visit the Lab Test page to obtain your free Lab Test reports on 14 different systems.
