Recognise the face? Perhaps not. That's chartered accountant Paul Thompson, who was appointed non-executive director of troubled lender Northern Rock on 18 January especially so he could lead the failed management buy-out.

Thompson told the press he would be able to grow the Rock's deposits because customers don't look at banks' credit ratings. He also said that if the government opted for nationalisation it would be morally wrong, because when governments support banks they distort the market.

The winner of the caption competition was Peter Choat. Congratulations Peter a bottle of bubbly is on its way to you. His winner entry was:

As the giant two-handled potty approached the man in blue, it's shadow cast a portent of doom...

Oh dear, when accountants try soundbites
Would you back a buy-out from a man like this?

What do you mean the investors are waiting at the bottom of the escalator?

Paul Thompson goes for the “Last Supper” big arms pose in an attempt to calm investors?

“Come on down” “the share price isn’t right”!

Having just seen the share price, Paul Thompson decides descending to Dante’s ninth circle of hell seems like an easier optiont.

Paul Thompson follows Michael Fish’s lead on accurate predictions. Absolutely nothing to worry about here!

Thompson . . .
grips the rails of his new Virgin sponsored time-travel machine and looks backward to stepping out on 17 January 2008.
