Dataflow has introduced an Excel Web Reporting tool that opens up its accounts data for remote reporting and ad hoc queries.

The system relies on Dataflow's Web Gateway Services, which is part of a longer term development to make the entire accounting and order processing system available online. This new approach will be unveiled in a few months' time, said Dataflow managing director Dariush Mogtader.

For the time being, the Excel web reporting mechanism provides a preview of the hosted concept. "Up to now, we had the abililty to dynamically link Excel to data in the accounts," said Mogtader. "While we were doing that, we decided to use the gateway server to put the Excel reports on the web."

Mogtader explained that the Web Gateway Services module sits between the outside world and the SQL Server database that holds the accounts information. The application uses XML messages to communicate information internally, so the gateway makes it possible to direct data externally - for example to a user's spreadsheet report. Figures can also be passed in the opposite direction.

Dataflow's web reporting system comes as a simple Add-in for the spreadsheet, which then connects it to the accounts database. "We could extend it to other SQL tables if clients require, and provide the ability to grab data from other applications," Mogtader said.
