MP expenses clampdown announced

Commons speaker Michael Martin unveiled immediate interim reforms to the MP expenses system yesterday.

In a speech to the House of Commons yesterday, Michael Martin revealed the following measures would be implemented immediately in a bid to clean up the MP expenses system and improve transparency:

  • A ban on MPs claiming for furniture.
  • MPs are prohibited from ‘flipping’ second homes.
  • MPs living together must designate the same home as their main residence.
  • Mortgage interest payments will be capped at £1,250 per month.
