Accountancy firm KPMG is to give all its UK staff free travel on London’s public transport system as part of a new environmental scheme aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Dan Martin reports.

The firm announced that 10,300 employees will be given an Oyster card, the smartcard used for travelling on the London Underground and bus network, to encourage them to make more use of public transport while travelling within the capital.

KPMG's Dr Ashley Steel, who leads the initiative, said: “KPMG people need to travel regularly between our 22 offices in the UK If all London based people switch just one taxi journey a week to using an Oyster card then over 300 tonnes of CO2 emissions can be avoided over the year.”

John Griffith-Jones, KMPG chairman and senior partner, added: “I have an Oyster card myself to get around in London – and now I would find it hard to do without it. The Oyster card scheme allows staff to take responsibility for the way they travel to and from business meetings.”

oystercard
Well if there is a benefit in kind - presumably initially the cost of the card - it won't be much because there is a £3 deposit and everything else goes to fares (in fact I think there's a promotion for it this week so you don't pay a deposit - more good news for KPMG. Private use will be a benefit but most of what they do will presumably be for business.

I save money with mine - mostly because I don't have to put money in the bus ticket machines which don't give you tickets...

OK but
are they also paying the tax on the BIK, or does this escape that?
