Time and billing software specialist Coretime is now offering a hosted service for accountants and other professionals to log their hours and manage their billing online.

Called MakeTimePay, the online service is based on a thin client implementation of Coretime's Tempus Pro time and billing/practice management application.

MakeTimePay has been operating for nearly a year and has attracted users in accountancy, financial services and construction.

Coretime managing director Derek Vard commented, "It was designed with accountants' work patterns in mind ' it is versatile enough to cover both straightforward time keeping alongside variations in fee levels based on time and nature of work."

MakeTimePay can simplify the calculations of total fees earned based on different fee levels, such as partners and trainees, and at different times (weekends, on site etc), Vard explained.

The total costs for setting up MakeTimePay for a five-user site - including training - would be £785, along with a monthly rental fee of £110. A half-day of training is recommended for users, each of whom is given a unique URL to log onto their own data.

In contrast, Vard noted that the cost of buying a similar installation would run to £3,000-3,500.

"MTP uses a proven solution which can be up and running within 24 hours of receipt of application form from customer," he said. "There are no annual support/upgrade requirements and all online customers benefit from unlimited telephone/email support and from the latest version of software free of charge."

After the early buzz surrounding "software-on-tap" of a few years ago, the accountancy profession has adopted a cautious approach to application service providers (ASPs) such as MakeTimePay. But according to Vard, there is a growing realisation within the profession of the advantages of dealing with clients - and internal staff data - on a hosted system.

"Accountants are definitely considering the ASP route as a viable proposition," said Vard.

"Issues of network storage, demands on bandwidth, maintenance costs and support are all factors in ASP take-up and we're seeing very definite changes in attitudes that favour handing over IT systems and support to specialists rather than taking on the costs and responsibilities of looking after them in house.

"It's taken a while for accountants to catch on to this idea, but as software has developed and as businesses have been seen to have success with ASP models, so the rest of the market has begun to follow."

maketimepay pricing clarification
Just to clarify, month one costs for a new client are £250 setup fee and £ 110 service cost. A half day's training costs £ 425, but is entirely voluntary, though recommended.
