This companion article to the AccountingWEB Guide to Online Research highlights key websites for people using the Web to try and establish how much a company is worth.

It is fair to say that business valuations are a moveable feast. They can be reached via a simple formula or they may require weeks of specialised and consultative work.

If you carry out this kind of project regularly, The Valuer business valuation tool may be appropriate. Developed by John Welford-Costello, it costs £220, but you can download a free evaluation copy. The Valuer uses an analytical approach, using projections of the business's future cash generation ability based on a minimum of user data input.

The author is also working on a series of Expert Guides to provide theoretical background to the tool itself. Search for "business valuation" in the search box at the top of the page.

Most online tools tend to be ready-reckoners, like the Haines Watts Business Valuation website.

If your valuation is more involved, and let's face it all but the most straightforward are, you may need to consult with specialists who will prompt you to consider a wider range of issues such as intellectual property, taxation planning, employee benefits and share schemes and intangible assets. Parmentier Arthur and Valuation Consulting both offer a breakdown of this specialised area.

Company valuations are meat and drink for the Inland Revenue, which regularly needs to assess companies for approved share schemes or for capital gains tax purporses. You can view the agency's internal guidance manual on share valuation online.

This and other venture capital and valuation websites are listed on TaxZone's comprehensive TaxLinks page.
