Pierce adds to corporate finance team
Chartered accountants and business advisers Pierce has made a new appointment to its corporate finance team. David Sharpe has joined the firm's Blackburn office as a corporate finance senior manager. Sharpe previously worked for Bolton-based chartered accountants Bentleys where he spent three years as corporate finance director. Prior to this, he spent more than ten years in industry working for family-run businesses, including the Springs Group and six years at D&S Food Products in Bolton.

Hacker Young expands network
Accountancy group UHY Hacker Young has expanded its UK network with the addition of Scottish firm Campbell Dallas. Campbell Dallas has four offices in Scotland with 14 partners. In addition to specialist service teams in corporate finance, business recovery, insolvency and tax, the firm also has experience in a number of industry sectors including agriculture, healthcare, professional, construction, tourism, charities and financial services.

Baker Tilly announces new partners
Mark Stewart, currently director of tax and Alex Tait, director of business services at Baker Tilly in Edinburgh, have been promoted to the position of partner. Stewart joined the firm in 2005 from KPMG, bringing with him over 13 years of corporate tax experience. He specialises in advising on the tax issues involved in PPP and PFI transactions and he will lead the firms PPP/PFI Advisory unit in Scotland as well as driving forward the Edinburgh tax compliance and advisory practice.

Tait joined Baker Tilly following his graduation from Dundee University in 1996 to train with the firm. He qualified as a CA in 1999 and was promoted to director in 2005. Tait has extensive experience of providing audit and business advisory services to middle market businesses across Scotland. He will head up the firms' strategic planning advisory unit in Scotland.

New partners at Saffery Champness
Saffery Champness has appointed two new partners.

Matthew Burton has been appointed as a partner within the firm's London office. Dual-qualified as an accountant and a chartered surveyor, Burton specialises in taxation and financial issues affecting land and rural business owners. He studied at the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester and prior to becoming an accountant was a Land Agent on a large UK estate. He joined Saffery Champness in 2004.

Shirley Mathieson has been appointed as a partner at the Inverness office of Saffery Champness. She joined Saffery Champness in 1992 and qualified as an accountant with the firm in 1995. She is responsible for the Inverness office's tax department and advises a generalist client base in which the tourism, food & agriculture and landed estates sectors feature particularly prominently.

Sir Digby joins Deloitte
Sir Digby Jones, who completes his six-and-a-half-year tenure as the Confederation of British Industry director general in June, is to join Deloitte, it has been announced.

Jones will work for the Big Four company as chairman of the Industries Group and as a senior adviser to chief executive John Connolly.

Sir Digby Jones said: "I am delighted to be joining Deloitte and especially to take on a role which will enable me to continue making a strong contribution to the success of UK business.

"[Deloitte] has a reputation for being solutions oriented and I look forward to contributing the Business insights gained from my CBI experience to help Deloitte clients succeed."

Coffee appointment for Ernst & Young executive
Andrew Murrell, a director of Ernst & Young has been appointed group finance director of Coffee Point Group, the UK's largest privately owned vending company.

Murrell, 36, worked in E&Y's transaction advisory services team, where he was responsible for mid-market businesses and private equity houses.

He began his career with Price Waterhouse (now PriceWaterhouseCoopers) starting in audit and business services and later moving into corporate finance. In 1998 he joined private equity investor CDC group plc, responsible for the London based investment team before moving to E&Y where he was promoted to Director in October 2004.

Moore and Smalley change to LLP
Lancashire-based Moore and Smalley has changed its status from a partnership to a limited liability partnership.

Rob Salter, managing partner at Moore and Smalley, said: "Becoming an LLP gives us the benefit of being a limited liability whilst allowing us to the flexibility of organising our internal structure as a traditional partnership. In terms of our day-to-day service nothing will change. It's purely a behind the scenes change which will give us the structure to grow the business and improve the service we offer to our clients.'

Established in 1882, Moore and Smalley is one of Lancashire oldest accountancy businesses. It now has 16 partners and over 130 staff in offices in Preston, Blackpool and Derbyshire. It provides accounting, business and financial advice to over 3,000 businesses and individuals across the North.

The Limited Liability Partnership Act came into effect in 2000 giving professional firms ' such as accountants and solicitors ' the chance to operate a similar structure to companies whilst retaining the flexibility of a partnership.

Kathleen treks through Morocco for charity
Kathleen Parker of Wellers Accountants in London is embarking on trek through the Atlas Mountains in Morocco to raise money for the well-known charity Childline.

Kathleen will join a group of over twenty other walkers for the trek to the summit of Mount Toubkal at 4167 meters. The expedition will take place in June this year.

Bedfordshire-based Landers the Accountants has been named 2006/7 South East Accounting Firm of The Year. The Award, sponsored by AVN The Accountants and The National Campaign, is voted on by a panel of over 200 fellow accountants.

Two new partners for Horwath Clark Whitehill
Horwath Clark Whitehill has appointed two new partners, bringing the total number of partners in the firm to 65.

Jaki Mitchell, who trained in HCW's Reading office and qualified in 1995, has been appointed as a partner in the firm's Thames Valley offices. Neil Bailey joins HCW as a personal tax and trust partner in the firm's private clients unit in London. He was previously was head of private clients at FW Stephens.

Mazars in lottery win
The National Lottery Commission has appointed Mazars as accountancy and tax advisers for the third licence competition. The licence to operate the National Lottery will be awarded in May 2007 with the third licence starting from February 2009.

Mazars will contribute towards the design of the Draft Invitation to Apply and will be part of the team assessing bids, including financial modelling based on bidders' proposals. The consultants will provide expertise on a range of issues, including the accountancy and tax implications of bidders' corporate structures, taxation matters arising from the competition and where necessary, will advise on matters relating to valuation and handover of assets once a bidder has been selected. They will also advise on corporate governance and risk management issues.

The team will be led by Nigel Grummit, who has over 20 years experience with a broad range of public and private sector organisations.

Mody joins PwC's UK pensions practice
Consulting actuary and pensions expert Raj Mody, has joined PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP from Hewitt Associates. Based in London, Raj will be responsible for leading the firm's pensions relationships with a number of major clients.

UHY Hacker Young appoints new head of corporate finance
Peter Petyt has been named the new Head of Corporate Finance at the London office of top twenty accountancy firm UHY Hacker Young.

Petyt joined UHY Hacker Young from Pridie:Brewster in December 2004. He has already attracted two new team members to his department, Jonathan Ruffell and Simon Woodcock, who he worked with before his move to UHY Hacker Young. Both will be involved in research, analysis and transaction support.

Pierce act on insurance brokers' £1.2 million buy-out
PIERCE Chartered Accountants has acted on the sale of a Manchester-based insurance broker in a deal worth up to £1.2m in cash and shares.
The Blackburn-based firm advised long-standing client Swinburne James on its sale to the CBG Group, which has now completed its 10th acquisition.

KPMG named best big employer
KPMG has been named the UK's 'best big company to work for' in the Sunday Times Best Companies Awards. The big four firm topped the league table for organisations with more than 5,000 employees.

The Sunday Times awards are based on responses to employee surveys. KPMG was top in six out of eight categories:

  • Leadership: how employees feel about the head of the company and senior managers;
  • Wellbeing: how staff feel about stress, pressure and the balance between their work and home duties;
  • My team: people's feelings about their immediate colleagues;
  • Fair deal: how happy the workforce is with their pay and benefits;
  • Giving something back: how much companies are thought by their staff to put back in to society and their local community;
  • Personal growth: to what extent staff feel they are stretched and challenged by their job.
  • KPMG came third in this award category last year and has been working "even harder since to improve further", said the firm's UK CEO, John Griffith-Jones.

    Oxfordshire accountancy firm Shaw and Company has received the Investors in People Award (IiP). The award was confirmed after the firm met the criteria set by the IiP, judged after an IiP representative spent a day within the offices of Shaw and Co speaking with various members of staff.

    PKF accountants and business advisers has launched a new
    national media and recruitment campaign aimed at new partners and directors. The campaign continues last year's successful 'big fish' partner recruitment campaign which supplemented internal promotions by contributing to the appointment of over 26 partners and directors during the last nine months.

    Hope boosts Blackburn firm
    Chartered accountants and business advisers Pierce has boosted its Blackburn headquarters with the appointment of a new auditor. Diane Hope joins the firm from Nelson-based protective textiles company Dale Techniche Limited, where she spent four years as company accountant.
