Practitioner's Diary: The temperature's rising!
The temperature is rising down in the West Country - and it's not just the weather that's getting to our general practitioner.

Sex and the City
Nichola,
I've just had the great fortune to have attended the CIMA Members in Practice conference last Friday and Saturday as MC. I'm a conference regular and noticed a considerable prevalence of sexual references in the presentations offered over previous years - or have I just got a dirty mind! No one objected though, and they certainly weren't all auditors!
Sexual Harrassment
I agree with the poster below - we need more sex in this section - apparently millions of people Google the term 'Sexy Accountants' (I expect there'll be a few more now) - this must indicate a hidden fetish that needs bringing out. Certainly many of our male clients are very keen to bring their records in to our attractive female staff rather than post them - I don't get many queues outside my door though!
Frustrated of Stoke
Probably
that those in tax are not getting enough? Mind you, it was an interesting query in its own right.
I don't think I have ever heard a reference to sex or even the most modest sexual innuendo at any tax conferences.
Massage or Prostitution or what?
I see that a recent Any Answers query of the topic of Massage or Prostitution or what? has attracted 42 responses (including some from me!) and nearly 2,000 viewings.
What does this mean?

Sex on Accountingweb
I have just been sent something which does not have a title but is basically "Sex and the auditor", which er, recounts the experiences of an audit manager who is anything but dull... I was wondering what to do with it, but if there is demand...
downtime broadband
It is frustrating for the system to go wrong/ I live in west country and operate
in London/ I found BT broadband the best and most reliable in both areas (I tried talktalk but no comparison)/ and now there help line is free/
the few problems I had were sorted without too much trouble/
Waste
Our local council has at last decided to offer us special clear plastic sacks (at a price) for a new separate plastic and cardboard collection - although only to businesses, not to domestic properties. So far so good. I fear that the next step will be to penalise us for excessive use of the general waste bags.
They now have a statutory obligation to provide at least one form of pretreatment for business waste.
And just to show how well though out the new service is, when we put a stack of flattened cardboard boxes out for collection we have to tie one of these new plastic sacks to the bundle!! Why not sell us simple, bio-degradable prepaid labels?
I suppose if they did that, someone would ask why they couldn't supply bags! LA officers ( and I'm one) may not be the most innovative and pre-paid bags are a long standing method of demonstrating that the service has been paid for.
Cardborad is always a problem due to the large size but low density compared to other wastes.
Mercia CPD on CD
Here are details of the Mercia CPD on CD subscription, in case anyone is interested:
http://www.mercia-group.co.uk/training/digital.htm
It's not cheap: The links lists the courses for 2008, which a pretty comprehensive, and states "As a digital subscriber you receive a programme of our 12 most popular CPD courses over a 12 month period, starting from the month you begin to subscribe. The cost of digital subscription is based on the size of your practice with a charge of £300 per firm plus £90 per partner and professional member of staff. The subscription will be invoiced in advance but can be paid in 12 monthly instalments."
Why not change training providers?
You could try Mercia. They send you DVD's in the post. You can watch them on a PC (I assume yours have speakers), the notes are included for you to print off. I think that you can send in questions. I think that they are very reasonably priced.
The Practical "Offline" Practitioner
Interesting. We've long held the view that the online world is far from practical. Reliability and speed are still major issues for us and it's good for this to be raised.

The Joy of **x!
It does seem that mentioning that other word ending in 'x' on this site does provoke as much interest so I'm not surprised at the number of viewings but maybe it is because of the apparent gulf between accountancy and the real world that makes it so exciting when they collide.
And Nichola, AW's very own Rob Lewis came to our conference last year, maybe he missed the naughty bits !
Now...back to the M.D's wife, we need to know!
