Star payroll software gets Inland Revenue accreditation

Star Payroll Professional has today received accreditation from the Inland Revenue and been awarded with the much sought after Payroll Standard.

The Inland Revenue Standards define precisely what should be expected from a computerised payroll system. In accordance with the relevant legislation, it must be capable of calculating tax, NICs, statutory absence recording and calculation, as well as tax credits and deductions. However, the Standards do not set any rules about the design and functionality of payroll systems and, for example, do not consider ease of use. That's down to the supplier!

All payroll systems are re-checked and thoroughly tested at the end of each 12-month period to ensure that developers consistently meet the criteria laid down by the Payroll Standard, which includes any new functionality. A supplier has to pass all of these tests to get the award. The Payroll Standard is designed to help accountants and other businesses select a payroll system that has all the essential features needed to work out PAYE, NIC and all statutory additions and deductions for employees and directors.

For the fourth consecutive year both Star's bureau and commercial payroll products, have also been successfully tested and accredited as suitable for transmitting data to the Inland Revenue via the Internet. This functionality is critical, as the Inland Revenue requires that the computer software used to file on-line must be capable of sending data electronically. From this year, it must meet the Inland Revenue Quality Standard, a quality check on the usability of the data. Star's product includes a full data verification routine with in-built reports to ensure data integrity before submission to the Inland Revenue.

Star has over 2000 licensed users of Payroll Professional and EBS, the integrated P11D product. The products are used by 34 of the Top 50 UK accountancy firms, including all of the 'Big 4'.
