Charterz R Us: The campaign for statutory rights
Consultation is still open on the Taxpayers' Charter. Accountingweb.co.uk has joined forces with Taxation magazine to campaign for statutory rights for taxpayers.
Consultation on the charter has now closed.
What are the main issues?
- New HMRC powers of inspection are not automatically matched with corresponding statutory safeguards.

Isn't the red cross saltire St David's?
No it is not. That is the cross of St George (you know, that Roman legionary who was probably a Turkish mercenary and almost certainly never went near England).
At least St David was Welsh, as was St Patrick.
The cross of St David is gold on black: http://flagspot.net/images/g/gb-dewi.gif

Phil, don't mention the r word
At least until after the next 6 nations!
@ Old Greying Accountant
Did you mention rugby?
How long the Union?
Will Labour get another Scottish vote?
How long then before the small minded bigots of the SNP destroy the Union?
Ironic if Labour won a general election but GB had no seat!
What would happen to the Scots in English seats if the Union was revoked?
But, the way things are going, what if all the Southerners follow their money north of the border - maybe the Tories would take Scotland
As they say, interesting times!
Psychic...or what!!??
Looks like there may be an English flag flying above one of Scotland's oldest financial institutions now that "Lloyds-Halifax" will replace the Bank of Scotland (est.1695)
Phil, couldn't resist...
...probably falls below the materiality threshold.
Sorry! (I know, this s/b a serious thread)
Well, well
You do indeed (on most days at least) learn something new every day!
Ahoy there me hearties
Rebecca, it is only a Union Jack when flown on a ship, otherwise it is the Union Flag!
Nicola, assuming the pole is on the left as would be logical, your Union Flag is upside down - or was that a subtle comment?

Crisis what crisis!
I just changed the flag, as one of our lovely web designers have given us a charterz stamp instead!
A nationality crisis
We apologise that we have used the English flag on the homepage of this site for this article - this has now been amended.
The Union Jack used here, however, does in fact cover all member countries of the United Kingdom.
Only ENGLISH taxpayers?......
......why the English flag? I see the Union Flag is used on the article itself, but they are not interchangeable.

Union Flag
The vertical red cross is St George's, who, I believe, was Armenian rather than Turkish.
The Saltire (diagonal) red cross, according to the interesting website link provided, is St Patrick's - and may represent either the Channel Islands or Ireland.
St David' cross was probably omitted for one of two reasons
1. Wales is a Principality (and part of England by conquest) rather than a Kingdom that joined by act of Union (no comment on reasonableness, merely likely historic theory)
2. Adding St Davids cross would make the flag very "busy" - and probably quite ugly (simply because of the colours)
