Gas fitters could be offered tax amnesty

Following the launch of the Tax Health Plan, Permanent secretary for tax Dave Hartnett suggested that gas fitters could be the next professional group to be offered an amnesty period.

gas fitters ?

I had to read this twice, because a quick glance did rather suggest that Dave Hartnett had fingered gas fitters : which he did not.

Many years ago I taught Liberal Studies at what was then called the Stoke-on-Trent College of Building and Commerce. The college catered for all the building trades, including gas fitters. Gas fitters, indeed, were seen as the crème de la crème among the trades. Something to do, I think, with the fact that an incompetent gas fitter probably has the highest chance of causing death and destruction...
