Under the proposed rules, the government will reclassify the income of self-employed workers in the construction sector to make them subject to PAYE and higher rates of national insurance.

Construction firms will be required to pay a national insurance rate of 12.8% on payments made to affected workers.

Self-employed contractors caught by the proposed changes will also have to pay National Insurance at a far higher rate.  Currently self-employed workers pay £2.40 each week in National Insurance Contributions (NICs) but if these changes are implemented this figure could jump to 12.8% of gross income.

AccountingWEB.co.uk has published several articles on the subject.

Those with clients operating in the construction industry only have until Monday 12 October to offer their feedback on the proposals. Click here to download the document and give your feedback today.
